Monhegan Island is a small island about 12 miles off the mainland. The population is less than 100 people year round, during the summer and fall there are more tourists than islanders.
Getting there is usually only by ferry. We took the Monhegan Boat Line from Port Clyde, the trip is a little over an hour and on a calm day. The boats are large and roomy with space below deck to get out of the wind if it’s cold. While in Port Clyde be sure to visit Marshall Point Light and grab a quick bite at the general store.
Our main objective was hiking on the island, there are miles of trails all very well marked. You can take the ferry for a few hours and get back the same day but that make for a very long day. We stayed a one of the cottages on island. The Western side offers the best views in my opinion, take your camera and be sure to get pictures of the headlands. There are maps available on the island on the main road. There are no vehicles on the island with the exception of the locals, so be prepared to walk everywhere.
